In a world where decisions affecting you are made every day in Washington, D.C., knowing how to make your voice heard is an essential part of being an impactful individual. Whether it's about climate change, the education system, taxes, social justice, or more, speaking up can make a difference to your surroundings. One of the most impactful ways to do that? Contacting your local Congressperson.
Congress members are members of either the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate who work together to vote on laws. Thus, direct communication with Congress members influences actual policies in several ways. By being able to get in contact with your local representative, an individual can push to influence a Congress member to hold a specific stance on an issue. At GALN, we believe that advocacy through youth leadership and civic engagement is crucial to ensuring a better future.
★ Remain respectful and professional in your email—refrain from rants or insults
★ Keep your message brief and concise, preferably under 300 words
★Being original is a key to success. Don't be afraid to share personal stories!
★ Always ensure that you have proper grammar and spelling.
★ Follow up after a couple of weeks if you haven't received a response.
The majority of Congress members have contact forms listed on their pages, but some have their email addresses as well. If in doubt:
1. Visit their official website.
2. Look for a "contact" or "email" button.
3. Submit your message through the form provided.
Don't just stop after sending an email! There are several other things you can do afterwards to increase your chances of being heard.
★ Encourage your friends or peers to write to their representatives as well.
★ Share experiences on social media (i.e., posting about the potential implications of a certain bill being passed)
★ Organize a group-wide emailing campaign.
You don't wait until you're 18, elected to an office, holding a degree, or under certain circumstances to shape policy in your region. Your ability to speak, contact, and represent your values is already more now than ever. By being able to email your Congress member, you're stepping into your authority as an advocate, leader, and change-maker.
